Matching camera tattoos on wrists
Forearm · Mixed · Photo
Two wrists are pressed together, each carrying a camera tattoo. The left shows an instant camera in outline with flat light blue fills and a red strap, while the right shows a twin lens reflex camera in fine black linework with grey shading. The clean outlines and simple flat colour sit against bare skin and a pale, softly lit background.

The Polaroid was Mum's idea, the twin lens was Dad's, and between them they decided we were going to be photographers whether we liked it or not. Nell got the instant one because she wanted something she could hold up and shake until the picture came out. I got the old box with the two round eyes because I liked the way it made the world look like it was being watched from above, careful and a bit solemn.

We had them done the summer the bus pass stopped working and we walked everywhere. The man in the shop on Cowley Road kept saying hold still, hold still, as if we were the ones being photographed. Nell sulked through the red strap and I sulked through the shading, and afterwards we sat on the wall outside eating chips and comparing the ink like it was a contest we were both losing.
The Polaroid is still in her kitchen drawer, its lens cap furred with dust. Mine is the one I carry about, because I never know when something will need looking at properly. Last month she sent me a photo of her wrist against a bus window, the blue ink gone a little green at the edges, and under it she had written, your turn to take one. I did. I held my wrist up to the light until the shadow fell right, then pressed the shutter and waited for the picture to come up in my hands.
