Matching cartoon characters with balloons

Thigh · Colour · Photo

Two people sit side by side showing matching colour tattoos of animated characters. The left figure wears an aviator helmet and goggles and a glasses frame, with a blue balloon above, while the right figure wears overalls and has an orange balloon, and both have softly shaded, cartoon-like features. The ink is bright, with blue, orange, brown and skin-toned shading, and the figures are set against plain skin and a teal top.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The wind came off the harbour before the rain did, and it took Eli's orange balloon out of his fist while he stood on the bottom step of the slipway. He watched it go, then looked at the boy in the leather flying helmet beside him, who was already working the knot loose on his own blue one.

'Hold this,' Pip said, pushing the string into Eli's hand. 'Properly, not like that.'

They ran along the harbour wall after the orange one, past the stacked crab pots and the nets drying like old sails, past Mrs Ostler's stall where the last of the bunting cracked in the gusts. The balloon kept climbing, bumping against the gulls, until it snagged on the railings at the top of the lighthouse, bright as a lamp against the grey.

Pip looked up at it for a long time. Then he tugged his goggles down over his eyes, which Eli had learned meant he was thinking hard. 'If the blue one's heavier, it'll pull the orange one down,' he said. 'Or the other way round. Either way, we need both.' So they tied the two strings together with a double knot, Eli's tongue poking out the side of his mouth, and let go at the same moment.

By the time the rain came in, Mrs Ostler said, she could see them from the cliff path: two small shapes drifting over the lighthouse side by side, orange and blue, with a single line of string running back down to the quay, where nobody was holding it any more.
