Matching Celtic knot forearm tattoos
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two forearms show matching tattoos of an interlaced Celtic knot with a looped outline and shaded grey bands. Handwritten script above each knot reads Forever Daddy's Angel on the left, while the right one is cut off after Daddy's. The linework is black with soft grey shading, and each knot sits centred on its arm against a plain background.

The lamp stopped turning at a quarter past three, and by four the sea had found the iron stair. I knelt on the gallery with my father's marlinspike in one fist and the spare mantle bag in the other, cursing the wind for taking my hat.

Dad had taught me the knot years before, at the kitchen table on Holy Island, using a length of tarred cord and a saucer for a guide. Four loops chasing their own tails, woven over and under until the eye could not find the end. He called it the sailor's forever and made me redo it until my fingers bled. I thought it a daft thing to teach a girl who wanted to paint.
Hauling the new generator cable up the stair, I found the old lashing had snapped clean through. I tied the replacement in his knot, nothing fancy, just those four loops locking the lamp housing to the rail. It held through the gale. By dawn the light was turning again, slow and white across the grey water, and the mainland boats were coming home.
When the relief boat came I left the cord where it was, pulled tight. The next keeper would have to cut it free and wonder who had been so stubborn. I'd like to think they'll leave it alone.
