Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Three wrists are shown side by side, each with a small yin yang design that includes a simple flower. The designs use solid black ink with bold filled areas and clean outlines, and they vary slightly in size and detail. The photo is taken indoors against a tiled floor, with the hands clasped together at the bottom of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The saucer broke clean through the middle, which Agnes said was the only honest way for a thing to break. Her sister Nell wanted it glued. Agnes wanted to keep both halves and sit on the back step of the Hallam Row bakery until somebody told her which one was hers.

Old Mr Dunning, who mended crockery and watches in the shed behind the chemist's, turned the pieces over under his lamp and laughed. "Two curves that won't close," he said. On the pale half a single dark blossom had been painted before the firing, and on the dark half a white one, the petals reversed, as if whoever made it had wanted each to carry a little of the other.

He would not mend it. He charged a penny, rubbed a pinch of stove soot into a bottle of Indian ink from the chemist's, and pricked a small curve onto the inside of each sister's wrist with a darning needle. Then he did a third for Mrs Hallam's boy, who had wandered in only to ask for a bent bicycle bell. He filled each flower in with the thick black, blew on it, and said, "Now you can't lose it."

Nell kept her wrist turned under for years. Agnes never told her which flower Mr Dunning had painted first. On the Sunday bus to Dunmoor they sat with their wrists side by side, the marks lined up like teeth in a comb, and the saucer stayed in the kitchen drawer, two halves that still fitted if you turned them just so.
