Sun and moon foot tattoos with script

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

Two bare feet are shown side by side, each with a small black tattoo along the outer edge. The left foot has a sun with rays above a line of script, and the right foot has a crescent moon above a matching line of script. The linework is thin and even, and the grey-white background keeps the focus on the ink.

The lamp goes out at the moment the bell in the customs hut rings six, and you have learned to trust that bell more than your own watch. Through the scratched glass you watch Marisol cross the wet tarmac with her flask under one arm and her collar turned up against the hill wind. She never says good morning. She taps the sill twice, which means the lorries were late, the sheep got through the north fence again, and nothing else happened that a person would write down.

You hand over the logbook. For eleven years you have kept it in two columns, and in the margin of every page you have drawn something small: a crescent for your hours, a sun for hers. Most mornings she adds a ray or two to her sun in pencil, as if the drawing were a conversation. Last week you found a single line beneath your moon that said the road is finished, the new crossing opens in March, and the valley will not need two people in a hut any more.

You did not reply that night. You sat with the kettle cooling and the barrier raised for no one, watching the sky lighten over the ridge. Then you took the pencil from the drawer and drew a thin line from your moon across the page to the edge of her sun, where the two shapes almost touched.

When you handed the book back at six, she read the margin without speaking, then turned the page and wrote the date beneath it in her small square hand. Outside, the first sun cleared the ridge and laid its light across the empty road, and for once neither of you hurried to the gate.
