Nell had mended nets for the Sennen fleet since she was fourteen, and she could tell a bad knot by sound alone, a dry little catch when the twine ran wrong. That morning every knot was wrong, because her cousin Tam was back from the Dogger grounds with a split hull and a story he wouldn't tell until the kettle was on.

The loft smelled of tar and wet wool. Along the beam hung a row of gull feathers Tam had gathered off the quay over the years, each one tied with a loop of tarred cord. "Grey ones are the lucky ones," he said, turning one between his fingers. "Dad used to say so." She didn't believe in luck, but she believed in her father, who had worked the same stretch of water for thirty years and never once come home short.

He told her about the squall off the Lizard, how the boat had rolled until the rail kissed the sea, and how a feather had settled on the wheelhouse glass at the worst moment, grey and perfectly still. He'd followed it with his eyes, and the boat had come upright. Nell said that was nonsense, then asked him which feather it had been.

He pulled a fresh one from his pocket, wrapped it in oilcloth, and set it down between them. Nell took her needle and began to splice a figure of eight into the cord beside it, a loop that could run on forever without a knot to catch. "Same again on the other side," she said, and tied it off quickly so her hands would not shake.
