Matching fine line wave tattoos on hands and forearms
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Four small wave tattoos are shown on different people's skin: one on an upper forearm, one on a finger, one on a wrist, and one on the back of a hand. The linework is thin and single-needle in black ink, with a simple curling wave shape in each. The soft, neutral background of denim and a yellow nail polish accent keep the focus on the small matching designs.

Dear Tomas, the sea has been sulking since you left, flat as a plate all week, and Mam says the gulls know something we don't. I went down to the slip this morning with the tide table in my coat pocket and found the old harbour chart pinned under a stone. Someone had drawn the swell there, a little curl like a question mark lying on its side, beside the words come round slow.

Dad used to draw those on everything. On the flour tin, the back of the rent book, the margins of his letters to the lifeboat men. He said you read a wave by the curl of its top, not its height, and that the ones that fold over like that are the ones that take the unwary off the Skerry rocks. I never learned the knack. You did, and you always said it was only patience.
Yesterday Nell Carrick came up from the boats with the same curl inked fresh on her wrist, and a grin like she'd robbed the harbour office. Her cousin had one done too, on the thumb, after they sat out the storm together in the boathouse with a single lamp between them. Nell is sixteen and still thinks it's clever. I told her Dad would have laughed, and she said that was the point.
So I have copied the curl onto the back of the lighthouse postcard you sent from Lerwick, and I'll pin it to the kitchen window. When the swell turns, I'll be on the wall at dusk with the lamp. If you can see it from wherever the boat has put you, you'll know what it means: come home round the slow side, the sea has agreed to let you.
