Semicolon tattoos on wrist, hand and behind ear

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Three small semicolon tattoos in thin black linework appear on a wrist, the back of a hand and behind an ear. The ink is fine and simple, with a solid dot and a curved tail. The photograph is taken indoors against a plain wall and a glass door, with pink nail polish and a black wristband also visible.

Mr Okonedo had the type drawer open before I'd got my coat off, and he didn't look up when he said we were short of semicolons again. Thirty-one years at the case in Hull, and he still weighed each one in his palm before letting it go into a forme. The compartment was no bigger than a matchbox, the lead worn soft at the tail where so many thumbs had pressed it.

'Half a breath,' he said, tipping the little pile into my hand. 'That's all it is. You give the reader somewhere to stand before the next thought arrives.' He had a rule that we never set one at the end of an obituary, because the dead do not need a pause. Then on a wet Thursday a letter came in from a woman in Cottingley, three pages in pencil, asking for a notice in the Courier for her husband. She had ended the first sentence with a semicolon and then nothing at all.

Mr Okonedo set it exactly as written, which was his way of respecting people. The proof went back to her by post with a slip asking whether she wanted the sentence finished. Her reply came the following week, scrawled on the back of a seed catalogue: Leave it. The sentence is not finished and neither am I.

He pinned the proof above the case, where it hung until the paper turned yellow and the pencil faded to a grey ghost. Every morning he tapped the glass with one knuckle and said, 'Half a breath,' and then went back to the bench.
