Matching finger tattoos with a heart and Star Wars motifs
Hand · Mixed · Photo
Two hands are held together, each showing a small finger tattoo. The left finger has a grey, blocky shape above a small red heart and the letters I and U, while the right finger has a dark rounded emblem with the word know beneath it. The linework is bold and mostly solid black and grey with soft shading, and the single red heart is the only colour.

Past the ninth moon of Arrow Reach, where the lanes ran so cold the ice rang like bells, the freighter Patience lost her second engine and then very nearly her nerve. Captain Teodra Vaal sat in the cockpit with her boots on the console and a spanner across her knees, listening to the hum drop a note at a time.

Pell was out in the cargo hold, splicing a fuel line by torchlight and singing badly to keep his fingers warm. Every few minutes his voice came up the speaking tube, cheerful and mistaken. "Two more minutes, Captain." She had told him a hundred times that the Patience could not run on minutes. Her grandmother had always kept to the old rule of the ore barges: if a ship is going to drift, say the true thing before the lights go, because the dark is a poor listener.
So she pressed the key and said it. "I love you, you soft-headed grease monkey." Silence hissed back across the channel. Then Pell's voice came, unhurried, the way he spoke about anything he was sure of. "I know." She laughed so hard she nearly dropped the spanner, and in the laughing the second engine caught, coughed, and roared up to a whine she could feel in her teeth.
Hours later, when they had limped into the lee of the old grey station at Halder Gap, Pell climbed the ladder with grease to his elbows and a ring of rust on one finger. She held her own hand up beside his, both of them marked with the same stubborn ink, and neither of them mentioned the drift. The station's lamps came up one by one across the viewport, and Pell said, as if she had asked him a question, "I know."
