Two small tattoos sit on adjacent fingers of a pair of hands. The left one shows a dark block-style shape with the letter I, a red heart and the letter U, and the right one shows a black Death Star with the words I know beside it. The black ink is solid and graphic, with the red heart as the only colour, set against lightly toned skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nell found the kit in a charity shop in Ramsgate, boxed in a carrier bag with a cracked lid and eleven hundred pieces that smelled faintly of pipe tobacco. Page nine of the instructions was missing, so she rang Tomasz, who repaired model railways above the bakery on Harbour Street and had never once in his life left a glue bottle uncapped. He came round that Saturday with a pot of pickled onions, a magnifying lamp strapped to his forehead and a theory about the dish that she chose not to hear.

They built it through February. The trench run kept snapping at the same joint, the grey paint ran in the crevices, and twice they stopped speaking over whether the superstructure should face the window or the door. By March the thing sat on her kitchen table like a dropped grey cabbage, faintly ridiculous and completely finished, and neither of them wanted to be the first to say that the evenings had been the best part.

Before sealing the top panel, Nell slid a folded slip of paper into the hollow core, written in biro in her careful capitals: I LOVE YOU. Tomasz found it three weeks later, when he went to glue on the last turret. He read it twice, put it back exactly where it had been, and the next morning he pencilled two words on the underside of the base, where nobody would ever look unless they turned the whole thing upside down.

Nell turned it over on her birthday. The pencil had smudged a little from the handling, but the words were still clear enough: I KNOW.
