Queen and king heart tattoos on fingers

Lettering · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two hands are shown side by side with small tattoos on the fingers. One finger carries a letter Q above a solid heart, and the other carries a letter K above a solid heart, both in black ink. The linework is simple and thin, and the tattoos sit centred on the finger in a plain, neutral composition.

Sit down, sit down, and mind the stove, it spits like a wet cat. You want the true version or the one the customs men tell? The true one has a deck of cards with a cracked corner, a tin of loose tobacco, and two brothers from Lenz who owned nothing but their nerve and a habit of trusting each other. Their names were Ilse and Matthias, and on the night the river froze at the Vessel checkpoint they sat across a wobbling table from a sergeant called Dobrin, with the whole long night ahead of them.

Ilse dealt. Matthias watched the sergeant's fingers, not the cards, because a man who counts his own luck will always count it wrong. Every hand Dobrin won, he tapped the table with his signet ring and smiled at the lamp. Every hand the brothers won, they passed the spoils under the table, one card at a time, so that whichever of them held the queen of hearts always had the king close enough to feel through the wood. Ilse had the queen. Matthias had the king. Between them they had a whole conversation that the sergeant never heard.

By the fourth hour Dobrin had Matthias's boots and Ilse's good wool coat, and he laid down his final hand with the whole room leaning in. Two low cards and a joker with its face scratched out. He reached for the pot and found the brothers already standing, the queen and king face up on the table, their ink hearts as red as the stove's glow. Dobrin swore. Matthias only shrugged and said the card had been looking for its partner all evening.

The ice held until dawn. Dobrin kept the boots, and I'm told he wears them still, though he never once got the cards to fall his way again. The brothers walked over the frozen river with the queen and king in their pockets, and that is why, if you ever cross that line in winter, you'll find an old woman at the gate who asks whether you've lost anything. She means the other half of your pair.
