Matching geometric cat heads on two forearms
Geometric · Forearm · Colour · Photo
Two cat head tattoos sit side by side on a pair of forearms, each built from angular, faceted panels of colour. The left cat is mostly grey with green eyes and pink accents, while the right cat is mostly purple with amber eyes and pink and red facets. The shading is flat and polygonal with clean edges, and the arms fill the frame against a grey knit sleeve.

Maud Tennant had been hired to strip the lead from a flooded chapel window, not to rescue anything, but the two cat heads in the bottom lights would not leave her alone. Grey Pilot, the tomcat, had green glass for eyes and a pink flick of tongue set in his lower facets. Across the sill, Violet had amber eyes and a coat of plum and violet panes, and somebody long ago had set the two of them facing each other across a gap of clear glass.

The harbourmaster's boy, Jem Rowe, carried the crates down to the quay while she worked. He asked why she didn't sell them. She said glass remembers which way it was facing. He laughed and said cats remember nothing but fish. Still, every evening the sea fog rolled in off the breakwater, and the two panels hung in her loft window throwing grey and violet across the boards, and in that light the cats seemed to lean towards each other.
In November the fog stayed a week. When Jem came up with a sack of mackerel heads, he found Maud asleep in her chair with a soldering iron gone cold in her hand. Pilot's panel had been moved to the far wall, and Violet's had been moved too, so that the two of them stood now with their eyes lined up across the room. Jem did not ask how it had happened. He only set the fish down between them, where the floor was warm, and went home.
