Matching cartoon cat tattoos on two calves

Calf · Mixed · Photo

Two cartoon cats sit upright on the lower legs, facing forward with large expressive eyes, whiskers and red inner ears. The cat on the left is cream with blue eyes and the one on the right is black with red eyes, and both have a gold crescent moon on the forehead. The bold black outlines and flat fills are paired with soft shading on the bodies, and the two designs are placed at matching heights for a deliberate pair.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The man from the Porto coach had two cardboard tubes under one arm and the face of someone rehearsing an apology. At the table by the window I asked him to open the first, and out came a porcelain cat no longer than my hand, cream all over, with blue eyes so wide they seemed to be asking me a question. A little gold crescent sat on its forehead. He opened the second. Black, red-eyed, the same crescent, the same upright sit, its tail curled round its front paw like a question mark hooked on the end of a sentence.

Declare them, I said. He said they were gifts, that his sister had sent a photograph from Hull of two cats she had painted for her twins, and he had promised to carry the pair across before the shop closed for the winter. The form said ceramics, one each, no value over fifty pounds. I turned the base of each one over and found no maker's stamp, only a thumbprint pressed into the glaze while it was still soft.

I should have stamped the form and waved him on. Instead I asked why the crescents were the same size, and he laughed and said his sister was particular about things that ought to match. She had written on the back of the photograph: keep them level, keep them looking at each other. He wrapped them again with care, nothing rattling, and I watched him settle them in his bag as though they might wake.

After he left I stood a while by the window and thought about my own mantelpiece, where one candlestick leaned because I had never found its partner. Outside a lorry reversed with a long mournful beep. I wrote 'cleared' on the form, then, because nobody was watching, I nudged the stapler until it sat square with the edge of the table, and for once it looked right.
