Matching heart and leaf wrist tattoos

Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

Two near-identical tattoos sit side by side on the inner wrists of two different arms, one horizontal on the left wrist and one vertical on the right. Each shows a black outlined leaf or pod shape with small curling vine details at the tips and a red heart outline inside, with a smaller heart beside it. The linework is clean and the red ink is lighter than the black outline, set against pale skin under even daylight.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The sea bean came out of a bale of Brazilian coffee in the hold, which Ruth said was the only honest thing the Cordelia had ever carried. It was the shape of a closed eye, glossy and black, with a curl of dried vine at each tip. Mags the bosun swore it had drifted down the Orinoco and across half an ocean just to end up in our galley, and nobody argued, because nobody argued with Mags before breakfast.

Ruth split it with a bread knife at four in the morning, when the watch was changing and the cook was asleep in his bunk. Inside, the two halves were pale and soft as candle wax, and each held a small red-brown heart pressed into the middle, as if the seed had been keeping something for us. She gave me the half with the bigger heart. I gave her the other, and we went below before the bell so no one would ask what we were doing with a knife at that hour.

Eleven weeks later the ship lay off Valparaíso with her cargo half unloaded, and a man called Teodoro, who inked sailors in a back room above a chandler's, copied the pod onto our inner wrists. Ruth wanted hers lying flat, I wanted mine standing upright, so that when we held our arms together the vine tips would meet. He used a red ink he said was lighter because he'd cut it with harbour water, and I never asked whether that was true.

Off the Horn the sea turned grey and the wind took the rigging apart a block at a time. On the worst night Ruth crawled across the galley floor and pressed her wrist against mine, and the two pods closed into one eye, hearts touching, while the ship groaned round us. Neither of us said anything. We had never needed to say much, and the sea had already made the rest of the arrangement.
