Matching swirl and heart forearm tattoos

Forearm · Mixed · Photo

Two people show matching tattoos of abstract black swirling lines and open heart outlines on their inner forearms. The linework is bold and smooth, with solid black strokes and no visible shading. A small pink fill appears in one heart, while the rest of the ink is black, and the photo is framed closely on the two arms.

Nell found the message where she had left it, pinned under a loose flint in the ruined chapel of Scarrow Castle, a folded square of oilcloth tied with fishing line. Her brother Tam had been gone three weeks, rowing for the mainland with the last of the salt cod and no word since. The line was knotted in the looping pattern they had invented from a broken semaphore book, swirls that meant come to the tower, and a small heart-shaped loop that meant home.

She climbed the north stair where the treads were still sound, past the window whose coloured glass had fallen out years back. One shard had stayed wedged in the sill, rose-red, catching the early light. She pressed her thumb to it as she passed, the way Tam always did, for luck neither of them believed in.

At the top, the tower room opened to sky. Tam was not there, but a second square of oilcloth was weighted with a stone on the parapet, and beside it a heart drawn in charcoal on a slate. Under it, in the same looping hand: the boat is back, the gulls are loud, come down before the tide. She read it twice, then turned and went down faster than was wise.

At the bottom of the stair the sea was already at the arch, and on the far side of the water a small boat rocked, one oar lifted in greeting. Nell ran to the edge of the rock and waved the slate over her head, and the knotted line at her wrist cracked in the wind like a flag saying the same thing she was.
