Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two hands are held together, with a small black outline heart on the index finger of the hand on the left and a second small outline heart on a finger of the hand on the right. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the hearts are placed close to the knuckles. The background is soft and neutral, with a touch of teal nail polish visible on one hand.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The snow had shut the Hollin pass by four, and by six the inn had one working stove, a dwindling stack of peat and eleven stranded travellers arguing over who had been sitting nearest the fire. Nell Garrow ran the bar because her uncle's knees had given up on the cellar steps. She kept a biro in her apron pocket and a ledger of who owed what. When the power failed at seven, the ledger became the only light she could spare, so she read it aloud by candle to anyone who would listen.

Hector, a salesman in a wet grey coat, was the only one not talking. He sat with his arms folded until a boy from the stranded coach stopped beside him, asking whether a man could get a drink on credit when the card machine would not work. Hector said nothing. He just watched two people at the end of the bench, Sol, a lorry driver, and Bea, a music teacher who kept losing her gloves, pass a single pencil between them and draw small shapes on each other's fingers in the candlelight.

By midnight the pencil had gone blunt. Bea had drawn a heart near the knuckle of Sol's first finger, and he had drawn one back on hers, both of them wobbling and shy. Nobody in the room mentioned it. Hector, who had spent twenty years selling insurance to people who never read the small print, found himself studying the two of them as if they were the only contract that mattered. Nell wrote nothing down.

The road was ploughed at dawn. The coach left first, then the lorry, then Hector, who came back to the bar before he went and asked for the ledger. Nell watched him turn to his own name, then write PAID in careful capitals, underline it twice, and leave the blunt pencil on the bar for whoever came next.
