Matching heart and loop tattoos on wrists
Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
Two near-identical tattoos sit on a pair of inner wrists, one on each arm. Each shows a purple heart outline with a thin pink looping line crossing the top edge. The linework is thin and unshaded, and the image is a casual, slightly soft phone photograph against a pale background.

The net needed mending before the tide turned at four, and Nell had taken the good needle down to the Mariner's Arms again. I sat on an upturned crab pot on the slip with the twine across my knees, watching the lugger come round the point without her.

Mam taught us the loop when we were small enough to get tangled in the nets ourselves. You pass the cord under, bring the other end over the top, and draw it tight so the knot lies flat on the palm and won't slip when the wet gets in. She called it the lover's loop, though she never said which lover, and she made us both tie one every morning before breakfast so our hands would remember it without our heads.
Nell came up the cobbles at half past three with her boots in one hand and salt in her hair. She didn't say sorry. She held out her wrist, where the same loop sat in blue ink beside mine, and I pulled the needle from my apron. We sat on the wall mending the same tear between us, one pair of hands each, until the boats were in and the gulls had gone quiet.
When the lugger's lamp swung into the harbour mouth, I tied off the last knot and found the loop had come out the shape of a heart, lying loose on the twine. I left it there for her to see.
