Small icon tattoos on fingers forming a heart

Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two hands are pressed together with the fingers curled to form a heart shape against a red textured fabric. Several small tattoos sit on the fingers, including a knife, a top hat, a key, a diamond and a rose, each drawn with simple black outlines and light fill. The close framing centres the hands and the tattoos, with the red background making the black ink stand out.

Dear Marjorie, you will think I have finally lost my wits, but Mr Sallow has agreed to the terms, and the key to the back room at the Gaiety is in my apron pocket as I write this. Don't tell Mother. She still believes the Hallam Street shop sells only buttons.

The man himself is a fool with a fine hat. He arrived in Harrowgate three Mays ago with a trunk of brass knives that never once cut anything, and a top hat he swears belonged to a conjuror who drowned off Scarborough pier. Half the town thinks he is a cheat. The other half pays sixpence to watch him make a diamond vanish from a glass of lemonade, and I have never seen him fail to find it again under a fishwife's bonnet.

Here is the bargain. He will teach me the trick with the bolts if I keep the books for the travelling show through the summer. The knife is for the cabbage stall, I told him, and he laughed until he coughed. He says a thing is only as dangerous as the hand holding it, and that the paper rose in his buttonhole is for whoever is brave enough to ask for it.

Write back soon. Tell me honestly whether I should go, or whether a sensible girl ought to stay put and mind the buttons. I have already pinned a rose to the inside of my good coat, so you may as well know which way I am leaning.
