Matching cartoon mouse tattoos on hands
Hand · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows two hands held together, each with a solid black tattoo of a cartoon mouse character in a rounded, simplified style. The character on the left is a male-style mouse in profile with large round ears, and the one on the right is a female-style mouse wearing a bow and a skirt, with the two figures facing each other. The black and white image has soft lighting and a blurred background, with the tattoos sitting in the foreground.

The apples were coming down faster than Dad could pick them up, so by the last week of August we had given up on baskets and let them drop into the long grass under the Bramley trees. Mum called it the windfall economy. Our corner of the orchard smelled of vinegar and wasps, and the cider house door had never shut properly since the winter the lintel cracked.

That was where the mice lived. Nobody had invited them. Gran said the pair had come in with the cider barrels in 1962 and had never once been caught, which she took as a personal insult. I used to leave them crumbs of flapjack on the bench. The little male, with his round ears and a tail that ended in a star, would stand up on his hind legs and look at me as if I were the one who needed feeding. The female wore a bow and a short spotted skirt and always seemed to be arranging something behind him.
The summer I was sixteen, Gran fell from the ladder in the top row and spent the autumn in the front room with the television on mute. I started going to the cider house every evening to press what was left, alone, with the lamp swinging from its hook. One night I found a cardboard box under the bench, lined with a child's handkerchief, and inside it two pieces of bent wire shaped into a pair of ears, one large and one with a bow. Someone had been making something for a long time.
I didn't know who. I put the wire back, left a flapjack on the bench, and pressed the last of the Discovery apples until the juice ran pink into the bucket. When I came back at dawn the crumb was gone and the box was shut, and on the lintel someone had chalked a small star, and beneath it, in a hand that was not Gran's, the word stay.
