Matching horse-in-heart tattoos on forearms
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two forearms are shown side by side, each with the same tattoo: a thin black outline of a horse's head in profile sitting inside an open heart shape. The linework is clean and uniform with no shading, and the ink is solid black against the skin. The composition is close and straight-on, with the two designs placed at similar heights on each arm.

Rain had been coming down on the Saturday market since seven, and Maud had stopped trying to keep the tarpaulin tight. It sagged over her trestle of second-hand bridles and the biscuit tin of loose brass buckles, and every cart that rumbled past sent a wave of puddle water over the edge. Her cousin Pippa was late, as usual, and Maud spent the hour watching the gap between the fishmonger and the wool stall where Pippa always cut through.

When Pippa finally arrived she was soaked to the knees and carrying a paper bag of hot chestnuts, which she set on the counter without a word. She pushed up her sleeve to get the wet wool out of the way, and there was the little horse's head sitting in its heart, the outline still a bit raw at the edges. Maud had drawn the design on a napkin at the Red Lion the night old Bramble was sold, and the farrier's daughter had inked it the following Thursday with the shop lamp swinging over them both.
"Mum says it looks like a sausage with ears," Pippa said, blowing on her fingers.
"Your mum has never looked at a horse properly in her life."
Maud pulled her own cuff back, and the two designs sat at the same height, both heads turned the same way, toward the mouth of the market where the rain was thinning into mist. Neither of them said what they were both thinking, which was that Bramble would have leaned her grey face over the stable door to nose at the chestnuts. Instead Maud tore the bag open, gave Pippa the bigger one, and told her to stop dripping on the bridles.
