The fog had sat on Skerrow Rock for three days, and Nell had stopped counting the hours she spent at the gallery rail, watching the beam go round and come back as if it had nowhere else to be. Her brother Tam was on the mainland with the supply boat, stuck behind the bar at Seaton, and the lamp was hers to keep.

The rule between them was older than the lamp itself. When one of them was out on the water, the other kept a figure of eight in the log each dusk, looped twice so the pen never lifted, with a small heart drawn in the right-hand curl where the ink ran thickest. Their father had taught them the loop as a way of saying the sea was not yet done with them. Nell had never liked the heart. It looked like something a child would draw on a slate.
On the third night the fog thinned to a grey sheet and she saw a shape far out, a red sail threading the gap by the Hollins. She fed the oil, wound the clockwork, and watched the light sweep, sweep, sweep across the water until the boat turned for harbour. Down the cliff path a torch flickered, then stopped, then flickered again, which was Tam's way of saying he had seen her light.
She opened the log at the morning entry and found the loop already there, drawn in his cramped hand, the heart pressed so hard it had torn the paper. Beneath it he had written: Not done yet. Nell took up her pen, drew her own loop beside his, and for once let the heart stay small.
