Matching infinity ankle tattoos
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
Two feet rest on a wooden floor, each with a thin black infinity symbol on the ankle. Each symbol has a small script word inside the loop, and one of the words sits beside a dotted line and a small heart. The linework is fine and even, and the black ink is set against plain skin with no colour, so the composition stays focused on the matching pair.

Dear Shirl, the number 9 still runs its figure of eight the way you sketched it on the back of a timetable in 1987, and I have stopped pretending I don't check the crossing point every shift. Gasworks loop on the left, Carrick Road on the right, and in the middle, where the two halves cross, the tarmac is still pale from the day the council dug it up and never quite finished.

The new driver, a lad called Tomasz who whistles through his teeth, asked me last week why the ticket machine has a little heart printed beside the dotted line on the roll. I told him it was a mistake at the factory and that nobody ever complained. He said that was the most romantic thing he'd heard all month and went back to his crossword, so I suppose the lie has been doing its job.
You were always the one who wanted to close the loop properly. I was the one who said the route has to end somewhere, and you called me a coward on the steps of the depot, and then you took the Lowestoft transfer and I took the late shift. Forty years of rounds. Every one of them passing the same spot, the same sodium lamp, the same bakery letting out its warm smell at twenty past six.
Yesterday I stopped the bus at the crossing and sat with the engine ticking and the doors open. Nobody got on. I left them open for a full minute anyway, the way you'd hold a door for someone who's always just about to arrive. Then I pulled away, and the loop took me round again, and I'm writing this from the layby at the top of the hill where the two lines meet. Come on the 9. I'll keep the seat by the window.
