Two matching black infinity heart tattoos with the word sisters in script, one on each ankle, shown in a black and grey lettering style.

Matching infinity heart sisters tattoos on ankles

Lettering · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

Two near-identical black tattoos sit on a pair of ankles, each showing an infinity loop merged with a heart shape and the word sisters written in script across the centre. The linework is solid and even, with no shading, so the design reads as a bold outline in a single dark ink. The photograph is taken at foot level on a light tiled floor, with both tattoos placed side by side and in sharp focus.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The Greaves Travelling Marvel had lost its lion in the spring and its band in the summer, and by October the only act still worth a shilling was the high wire. So the sisters Nell and Dora Pyke walked it every night for whoever had come in out of the rain to a fen town with no name on the poster. They walked it the old way their grandmother had taught them, out to the far post, round it, and back along the same line, a loop that never ended. She had called it the figure for catching yourself.

Mr Greaves came to the caravan with a ledger under his arm and a buyer's offer for the wagons, the striped tent and the wire. Dora wanted to take it. Nell wanted to walk one more season. They argued until the lamp guttered, and then Dora pulled up her skirt and showed the ink on her ankle, the loop of it, with SISTERS written through the middle in soot and needle work their grandmother had done by candlelight when they were girls. Nell had the same mark on her own foot. Greaves had seen it a hundred times and never once thought it could be sold.

On the last night the wind came off the Wash and took the near guy rope clean out of its pin. The tent heaved. Dora went up anyway, and Nell went up after her, and they met at the top of the figure where the two lines cross. There was no room to pass. Neither of them stepped aside. They turned together, as they had always turned, and walked back along the loop, one foot after the other, until the crowd below forgot the tent was sagging and began to clap.

Afterwards there was only sawdust, and two lines of footprints running round the post and back, as neat as a stitch.
