Every August the two of them walked the garden path in a figure of eight, the way Aunt Hester had taught young Nell, because a loop with no ends was the only sort of walk that brought you back. Nell went round the apple trees with a ball of purple twine, and Hester went the other way with teal, and where the paths crossed by the sundial they stopped, swapped the balls, and said each other's word aloud, niece and aunt, the way you'd call across a field.

One year Nell went to the city to learn to be a clerk, and the letters came on Thursdays in a hand that leaned uphill. Hester kept walking the eight alone. The grass wore thin at the crossing, and the gardener grumbled about it, but she would not let him reseed.

When Nell came home at Michaelmas she found the crossing bare earth, and in the middle of it Hester had raked out a small heart and planted it with sweet peas, purple on one side and teal on the other, the two colours tangled so no one could say where one stopped. Nell knelt down. The twine in her pocket was still purple, and her aunt said nothing at all, which was how they had always said the important things.
