Infinity heart tattoo on the inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo of a heart outline joined to an infinity loop sits on the inner wrist of a forearm. The linework is thin and even, in solid black ink with no shading. The background shows a bathroom with a sink, a toilet tank and a green towel, and the tattoo is centred in the frame.

The net came up the slipway at first light with a knot in it nobody on the Constance Mary would own to. Nell Ashdown knelt on the wet stones and turned the cork line over in her hands, feeling for the place where the twine had been pulled through itself, two loops locked around a heart-shaped gap the size of a thumb.

She knew the hand that tied it. Eli Carr had never tied a plain knot in his life. He'd taught her on the bench behind the net loft, the winter the harbour froze: take the working end round, back through, and let the loop keep going until it had no beginning you could find. "Keeps the line from fraying at the pull," he'd said, grinning, tar under his thumbnail. She had called it showing off. She had not thought, then, that she would one day be asked to unpick it.
Skipper Hal Pryce stood at the top of the slip with his cap in both fists. "Found it snagged on the trawl door," he said. "Nothing else came back with it. Not a fish, not a float." Nobody spoke. The gulls went on arguing over the gutted offcuts.
Nell did not unpick the knot. She worked the mesh around it instead, sliding her needle through the mend and leaving the loop whole. When the net was hung again on the drying pole she took a lump of chalk from her apron and drew the same shape on the quay wall: a heart knotted into a figure eight, one line, no lifting the chalk. The tide would have it by noon. She drew it again the next morning, and the morning after, because that was the only way she knew to keep him in the sum of things.
