Matching infinity symbol tattoos on wrists
Other · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands are held together with their wrists turned up toward the camera. Each wrist carries a small black infinity symbol outlined in simple, solid lines, and the two tattoos match. The left hand has teal nails with glitter accents and the right has pink nails with glitter, set against a wooden table.

Dear Bet,

The Discovery trees are dropping early this year, so the windfalls are already going soft in the long grass under the ladder rows, and the wasps have found them before we have. Dad says the wet June did it. I've been out there every evening with the buckets, stepping round the pallets Mum's boyfriend left, and counting. Eleven rows. You always said the eleventh row was cursed because it faces the lane and gets the lorries' dust, and I still think you were just being dramatic.
Your postcard came on Tuesday. Leeds looks grey in the picture, and you wrote that your flat has a window that opens onto a bin store, which made me laugh until I had to sit down on the step. I keep the card propped against the kettle. I haven't told Dad you're coming back for the picking, because he'll make a fuss and then forget, and you know how he gets about the ladder.
Here's what I actually want to say. When we pressed our wrists together behind the cider mill that day and Mr Ashby's boy inked the loops, I thought it was daft. Now I look at ours when I'm reaching up into the branches and the lines still look sharp, the little crossing sitting right where the two loops meet, and I think of the rows running round and round and never quite reaching the lane. Come home for a week. The eleventh row's ready, and I'll hold the ladder for you this time.
Love, Nance
