Matching "Like Daughter" and "Like Mother" script tattoos
Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
Two people are shown in a close black and white photograph, with one tattoo on the upper chest reading "Like Daughter" and another on the shoulder reading "Like Mother". Both are flowing script lettering in fine black linework with a small heart near the end of the second phrase. The skin is shown in soft, slightly grainy tones, and the framing crops out the faces.

Dear Mags, you'll think I've gone soft, writing you a letter at four in the morning while the first trays are still cooling, but the girl has beaten me to the ovens again and I want to tell someone before I start lying to myself about it.

Her name is Nell. She's sixteen and has never once in her life got up before the milk van. Yesterday she shaped the Saturday sourdough without asking, then scored every loaf with that quick flick of the wrist that took me three years of ruined crusts to learn from Dad. She didn't even look at her hands. I watched from the proving room and thought, there she is, like mother, like daughter, and I hated how much I liked hearing it in my own head.
She burned the first tray of bread rolls, swore like a dockhand, and reached for the peel. Then she stopped, tapped the base of one with her knuckle, and said it sounded hollow enough. It did. We ate it standing by the back door with flour still on our forearms, and she said it was the best thing she'd made all week, which was a lie, and we both knew it.
Dad's old stamp, the little heart we press into the corner of every loaf, is still in the drawer under the till. I'm giving it to her on Friday. Tell Pete the van's late again, will you, and that I'm not cross about it.
