Matching moon and stars wrist tattoos
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
Two people's inner wrists are shown with matching tattoos of a solid black crescent moon, two small five-point stars and curved script reading to the moon and back. The crescent and stars are filled with solid black ink, while the script is finer, with thin, even strokes. The hands are clasped together in the frame against a warm, dimly lit background, and the tattoos sit at the centre of each wrist.

Dear Tom,

Your mother has asked me not to tell this story at the wedding, so I am putting it on paper where it can't slip out over the sherry. In the summer of 1971 your great-aunt Edie and I were nineteen and skint, and we walked into a parlour behind the Margate pier with eleven shillings between us. The man inking the wall had a parrot on his forearm and a cough like a tractor. He asked what we wanted, Edie said a moon, I said the same, and he said that was a dear thing to want twice.
We chose the crescent because it was the only shape we could both draw on a napkin without arguing. He filled it solid, black as a boot, then the stars, and then, because Edie had read it in a magazine at the dentist, the words. To the moon and back. He wrote it in a curl that made it look like a signature from someone posher than us.
Edie went to Canada in '74 and I stayed in Kent and married a man who sold kitchens. Last month she rang me from a hospital in Ontario, and the first thing she said was, "Show me yours." I held my wrist up to the phone like a fool. She laughed until the line crackled, then said, "Still going, then," and I said yes, still going, and that was the whole conversation, and it was enough.
Love, Gran
