Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Four wrists are shown side by side, each with a small black script design reading No. 4, stacked with a fraction-style slash. The third wrist also carries a detailed black key outline above its lettering. The linework is clean and fine with solid black ink and no shading, and the arrangement is evenly spaced against a plain light background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

At the end of August the apples over Harrow Lea were heavy enough to bend the boughs to the grass, and the old steward, Abel Quint, went round the orchard wall with four iron keys on a ring. Each gate in the wall had a number cut into its lintel, one to four, and each opened on a different quarter of the trees. Nobody in the village could say why there were four gates when one would have done.

Abel's four daughters had each been given a gate to mind when they turned sixteen. Ada took the first, the second took the second, and so on down to Wren, who took the fourth because she was the last to ask. The keys were pressed into their palms in the kitchen and they were told not to lend them to anyone, not even to each other. The fourth key had a bow worked like a rose and a bit cut in a steep zigzag, and Wren kept hers on a loop of string round her wrist, where it knocked against the bone when she reached for the high branches.

In a wet September the lane flooded and the mill cart could not get through the first gate, so Ada came to Wren's gate at dusk and asked for the key. Wren said the fourth gate was hers to keep. Ada said it was the only gate that opened onto the road to the mill, and that the miller had their father's debt written in his book. They argued until the light went grey. In the morning Wren found her string cut and the key gone, and four windfalls laid on the step, each one bitten once.

Wren walked the wall and found the fourth gate standing open, with her sister's boot prints going out beyond it into the mud. She did not follow. She took the other three keys from their hooks in the shed and threaded them onto the same loop of string, one above the other, and counted the gates from one to four until she was sure of which door was which. Then she tied the loop back round her wrist and went up the ladder to pick, because the fruit would not wait for anyone's quarrel.
