Four matching numbered monogram forearm tattoos

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Four inner forearms and wrists are shown in a row, each with a matching black script monogram design combining the letter M and the number 4 with a numbered label from 1/4 to 4/4. The third tattoo includes an ornate skeleton key above the lettering, with fine, even linework and no shading. The ink is black on pale skin, and the tattoos are arranged evenly across the frame against a plain background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The snow has shut the pass since noon, and by six the lamps in Marrowby House are the only thing anyone trusts. Mrs Fenwick hands you the ring of keys without looking up from her ledger, four brass keys stamped with an M and a number, and tells you the top floor needs airing before the stranded coachmen start up the stairs. You take the lot and climb, the candle guttering in your fist.

Number one opens with a soft turn. Number two has a draught that smells of wet wool and windfall apples. Number three is the ornate one, its bow scrolled like a small crown, and it will not turn. You work it, breathe on the iron, try again, and feel the wards shift as though something behind the door has decided to be stubborn. Below you the bell rings twice, the signal for the stranded, and you hear boots stamping snow off on the flagstones.

You leave number three shut and go down to say so. Mrs Fenwick sighs and tells you the locksmith in Ardwell cut all four from one blank, that the third has always been fussy, and that the guest who asked for that room is the only one who has never once complained of the cold. She takes the key from your palm, sets it in the lock with a practised twist, and the door swings open onto a room already warm, a fire banked low, and a single letter propped against the pillow, addressed in a hand you have seen only in the ledger.
