Botanical · Hand · Colour · Photo

Two hands rest side by side over damp grass and soil, with a small flower tattoo on one finger of each hand. The flowers have a simple, bold outline with solid purple-blue fill and show slight softening at the edges. The composition is close and even, with a blue jumper sleeve on the left and a checked shirt sleeve on the right.

Nell had been insisting for a week that the dog violets would be out by Saturday, and Tom, who had no interest in violets, kept pretending not to hear. They were on their knees at the allotment on Cragg Lane with a trowel between them and a paper bag of seed gone soft from the rain. The shed door hung off one hinge behind them and the wind kept nudging it open.

Their grandmother's rule had been simple: you did not buy a plant for a plot you had not walked. So for forty years the bed by the water butt had been left to whatever wanted to grow there, and what grew was small, purple, five-petalled and stubborn. Nell pressed one between her thumb and the dirt and said it was the only thing in the county that asked for nothing. Tom said that was a poor sort of compliment to pay a flower.

They found the old biscuit tin under the bench, its lid rusted into the shape of a pear. Inside lay a folded note in their grandmother's looping hand: Sow where the ground is poorest. It will still come. Tom read it twice, then pushed the seeds into the bed one at a time while Nell held the bag open and told him he was doing it wrong.

In March Nell went back alone. Between the cabbage stumps, where the soil had been turned to grey porridge in November, there were the first flowers, small and unbothered, as though they had always been there and she and Tom had only been slow to notice.
