Brother Edmund, the second pineapple ripened on Tuesday, two days after the first, which I am told is a kind of insult the glasshouse means to pay me. Brother Hugh has been standing over it with a knife since Matins as if it might sprout a sermon. Our Prior will not let either of them be cut until the Bishop's man comes up from Ripon, so for now they sit side by side on the slate shelf above the boiler, brown scales catching the lamp, crowns standing up like the hair of a startled bishop.
