Two pineapple tattoos sit on the ankles of two people, shown side by side. The left pineapple is filled with solid black patterns, while the right one uses grey shading and fine outlines to show the fruit's scales and crown. Both are rendered in black and grey ink against plain skin and a dark background.

Two pineapples came off a boat at Gravesend in a wet spring, wrapped in sacking and paid for with a gold coin no inn would take. The man who carried them, Tobias Quail, had a fiddle and no money, so he offered the fruit to whichever sister would drive him to the fair. Marian, the elder, chose the one with the close black lattice, scored like a chessboard. She said it looked like a thing that had waited in a cellar a long time and meant to keep its counsel.

Her sister Pell took the other. Its skin was grey and scaled like a river trout, and the crown stood up proud as a soldier's plume. Pell said it was the honest one. Marian laughed and said honesty was a fine thing to carry in a crate, but it bruised.

They sold their fruit at the Michaelmas fair for a penny apiece, and that night they sat up in the wagon comparing crowns until the candle guttered. By morning the black one had gone soft and the grey one was still hard as a stone. Marian wept into her shawl. Pell cut hers open and handed her the sweet yellow half, and that, is how the pair of them came to share a single wedge of sunlight and never quarrel over the rest.
