Matching pizza slice tattoos on forearms

Forearm · Colour · Photo

Two small matching tattoos of a bitten pizza slice with red pepperoni sit on the inner forearms, one on each arm, with the hands and wrists visible at the top of the frame. Each design has a bold black outline with flat yellow-orange cheese and red pepperoni fills, with no shading. The tattoos are set against plain skin and a dark background, with the two arms placed side by side.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Rain had been drumming on the awning of Carrow Street Market since six, and Dessa had sold eleven slices from the hatch of the van before the dough ran out. The pepperoni sat drying on the tray in little red coins. She wiped the grill with a damp cloth and watched the last shoppers hurry past under umbrellas that kept turning inside out.

Owen came round the back at ten to close, shaking water off his hood and holding a paper bag gone see-through with grease. "Found this on the bench by the fish stall," he said. Somebody's gran, or a gull with ambitions, had taken a neat crescent out of the last slice and left the rest like a dare. Dessa looked at the missing bite and laughed, because it was exactly how her dad used to leave the crusts on his plate every Sunday, a small rebellion nobody in the family had ever explained.

They had argued about ink for a year. He wanted something with more colour, she wanted something that looked like it had been eaten and kept going, and in the end they settled on the bitten slice because neither of them could stop seeing it. The artist in the back room on Lamb Lane traced it onto tracing paper while rain hammered the skylight, and afterwards they sat on the same cracked vinyl bench, pretending not to wince.

Now Owen tore the leftover slice in half along the bite line and held out the smaller piece. "Same bite, different sides," he said. Dessa took it, and for a moment they stood under the dripping awning, two bitten corners held out toward each other, while the market lights blurred into the wet black of the road.
