A small pizza slice sits on the side of a middle finger, drawn with a bold black outline. The slice has a yellow cheese and crust area with three red pepperoni circles and a drip of cheese at the tip. The hand rests on a white textured towel against a plain background.

Nobody in Hollin Bridge had ever seen Mrs Pargeter eat anything she hadn't first accused of being a fraud, so when the new pizzeria on Mill Lane opened and she marched in with her knitting bag and sat down at the window, the lad behind the counter, Dev, went pale and reached for the good tea towel.

She ordered one slice. Just the one, she said, from the end with the most pepperoni, and then she watched him cut it with the wheel as if he were defusing it. The cheese had a bit of a drip down the tip, which she pointed at with a knitting needle. "That's not a drip, that's a confession," she said, and Dev, who had no idea what she meant, nodded very seriously.

She ate it slowly. Each pepperoni got a look, the way a magistrate considers evidence. When the crust was gone she wiped her fingers on a paper napkin, folded it into a neat square, and slid a ten-pound note under the sugar pot. Dev opened his mouth to say the slice was on the house, but she was already at the door, bag swinging.

She came back the Tuesday after, and the Tuesday after that. By the third week Dev was keeping the end piece aside with the most pepperoni on it, and nobody in town ever learned what she had decided about him, although the scarf she knitted him that winter was the exact shade of a well-done crust, and he wore it every day he worked.
