Matching queen and king tattoos on two hands
Hand · Colour · Photo
Two hands are held together, each showing a red tattoo of a letter with a small crown above a solid heart, forming a Queen and King card-style pair. The lines are bold and filled in a single red ink, with the crowns and hearts sitting neatly over the knuckles. The background is a blurred outdoor scene and the wrists wear woven and leather bracelets.

Sit yourself down on that bench and mind the wet, because the six-forty is late again and I have time for one more tale before it limps in. This is about Hartley Road station, where the rain comes sideways off the marsh and the lamp room smells of paraffin. There was a pack of playing cards kept in the drawer there, worn soft as cloth, and the signalman's boy, Tom Pell, won it off a sailor in a game nobody saw fairly played.

Tom had two cards he never let anyone else touch: the Queen and the King of hearts, each with a little crown sat right on top of the heart like a hat a size too big. He told Nell Ashby, who sold the tickets, that whoever held both would never miss a train again. Nell didn't believe a word of it. She had a head for timetables, not luck, and she said so every morning while she stamped the Manchester returns.
The trouble came in the spring the line flooded. The Queen went out on the milk train to the coast with a carter's boy, and the King stayed behind in the lamp room with Tom, who kept turning him over in his fingers and wishing. Nell, who had her own reasons for watching the platform, scribbled a note on the back of a fare slip: meet me at the junction and hold up the King so I know it's you.
He did. The train groaned to a stop in the rain, and Nell leaned out of the carriage window with her palm flat against the glass. Tom pressed the King to the other side, and through the wet pane the two cards met, crowns touching, red ink bright as a warning light against the grey. The guard blew his whistle, and neither of them let go until the wheels caught.
