Two matching black fine line heart tattoos with swirling scrolls and script reading Big Sis and Little Sis, shown on two forearms.

Matching sister heart tattoos on forearms

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two forearms show a matching pair of tattoos, each a heart built from delicate looping swirls with the words Big Sis on the upper arm and Little Sis on the lower arm. The linework is thin and even in black ink, with no shading or fill. The composition is close and cropped, with both designs sitting diagonally across the skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dad forged the gate the winter before Mum died, out of a bent bedstead and a length of rod he'd got from the scrapyard in Hebden. He curled the top into a heart full of scrolls. Nell, who was six, said the scrolls were the heart's thoughts, and I, who was nine and had opinions about everything, said they were just swirls.

Thirty years later I still have to duck to pass under that gate. Nell comes up the path now with a carrier bag of bulbs from the market and a face that has already decided to argue. She is the one who kept the garden going after the lease changed hands and the new people wanted gravel. We do not discuss gravel.

Last spring she brought me a sweet pea seedling in a yoghurt pot and asked me to help it up the wire. I had forgotten how the tendrils work. They don't climb so much as feel their way along, then wrap a thing once, hard, and refuse to let go. I showed her how to loop the first turn by hand while the stem was still soft, the way Dad taught us. She said I was doing it wrong. I said I wasn't. We stood there in the wet grass with green fingers, both of us grinning like fools.

By August the plant had climbed the whole gate. Nell tied the last tendril to the scroll nearest the latch, right where the heart's point meets the bar. "There," she said. "Now it knows where home is." I told her that was daft. She told me to hush, and we went in for tea.
