Matching small swirl tattoos on ribs and neck

Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

Three people are photographed from behind in a domestic setting, with bare midriffs and denim or dark clothing. Each shows a small, identical stylised swirl or loop motif in thin black linework, with no visible shading. The ink is black on skin, and the composition centres the middle figure's neck tattoo between the two rib tattoos.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Maud had been pricking out seedlings since six, and her knees had given up somewhere around the courgettes. Her cousin Pearl was meant to be doing the sweet peas, but Pearl had gone to sit on the wall with her boots off, heels knocking against the brick while she watched the lane for the post van.

"You've got them wrong," Maud said, holding up a tray. "Look at the roots. They've wound round themselves like a bracken frond. You'll never get them to take like that."

The three of them had made the mark the summer Gran died: a loop that curled in on itself and then uncurled into a tail. It was scratched into the potting shed door, pressed into the lid of the biscuit tin, and cut lightly into the inside of the gate latch where only they would find it. Nobody had ever said what it meant. Pearl swore it was a snail. Aunt Ros said it was a fiddlehead, the bit of fern that waits to open until it's ready. Maud had a theory of her own and kept it to herself.

She teased the knots loose one root at a time, the way Gran had shown them, until each seedling hung pale and straight across her palm. She set them in the bed in a neat row, every tail turned towards the back door. By the time the van came grinding up the lane, the sweet peas were in, Pearl had her boots back on, and the letter propped against the water butt had a stamp with a fern printed on it. That was reason enough to go in and put the kettle on.
