Matching stick figure tattoos on ankles

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

Two stick figures in dresses are tattooed on the back of two ankles, one with a ponytail and one with a rounder head. A thin looping line connects them and ends in a small heart. The linework is simple and uniform in black ink, with no shading, and the figures sit centrally on each ankle against plain, softly lit skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You have carried the thread for nine days across Ellowen, a kingdom so disputed that no two maps agree on where it ends. It leaves your hand at the salt market in Brisk, loops over the toll bridge at Carrow where the keeper pretends not to watch, and ends in a small knot shaped like a heart. The weavers say that is the only honest thing a stitch can do.

At the far end waits Ysolde Marrin, the ledger-clerk of the high tower, who once wrote your name in the margin of a tax roll and never crossed it out. She keeps her hair tied back so the wind off the lake cannot steal it, and she never looks up when the bells ring noon. Instead she counts the thread's loops, one for each letter that has passed between you, and she stopped counting at forty.

The river at Carrow is high this spring, and the toll-keeper has started charging for the thread itself. You pay him a copper, then a silver, then the ring from your own finger, which he bites and hands back with a shrug. Halfway across the bridge the line goes taut against the current, and you think of cutting it, the way a sensible person would cut a kite string in a gale.

You do not cut it. You tie the last loop round the nearest railing, walk the rest on foot, and when you reach the tower Ysolde is already at the window with her hand out, palm up, as if she has been waiting for the thread to tell her you are still coming.
