Two small outline tattoos on the heels

Other · Mixed · Photo

Two bare feet are shown soles up against a dark green fabric. On the left heel is a black outline drawing of a round object with red and blue bands and a central dark rod, with small linked parts around it. On the right heel is an orange rectangular panel with four hatched bars and a looping black line on its side. The linework is bold and uniform, with flat colour fills and no shading.

The clockwork at Scarrow Point had to be wound every four hours, or the light stopped and the boats came in on the rocks. Tam Greave was fourteen the winter his father's chest gave out, and he took the key himself. Nobody had told him the lamp was a sort of animal. It needed feeding, and it sulked if you were late.

The old lens turned on a bed of brass, and beside it hung the governor, a red and blue glass ball that spun faster when the weights ran low. The panel by the stair had four slatted bars that his father called the ladder, each one a stage of the night's watch. Tam learned to read them by lamplight. Top bar lit, the weights were high. Bottom bar dark, and the sea would have him by morning.

One night in March a fog came in thick as wool, and the bell out past the shoal began to ring wrong. Tam had slept through his turn. He ran the stair with his boots unlaced, found the bottom bar dark and the glass ball slowing, and wound until his palms ached on the crank. The beam swung back out over the water. Far off, a lantern answered, then another, then a row of them climbing the swell.

When his father came down at dawn, he looked at the ladder for a long time, then at his son's hands. He said nothing about the sleeping. He only tapped the top bar, the one that glowed, and went up to see to the lens.
