Matching swallows on both feet
Traditional · Ankle · Colour · Photo
Two bare feet rest on a slatted wooden bench, both with the same swallow tattoo near the ankle. Each swallow has bold black outlines, with red breasts, blue wings and dark accents, in a classic flash-style design. The feet are dusted with white sand, and the warm brown tones of the bench sit behind them.

Mags had counted the swallows from the fourteenth floor every April since the block went up, and this year there were eleven, two more than last year. She carried her tea out onto the balcony, where the wind came off the estuary bringing grit from the car park and something saltier from the mudflats beyond the sea wall.

Her son Danny had driven down from Hull with a carrier bag of sand he'd dug from under the pier. She had once told him that swallows come back to the place they were hatched, so he meant to scatter it on the old slatted bench by the lift, where she used to wait for Frank's bus after his shifts at the dock. "It's daft," he said, sweeping the planks with his hand. "Nobody sits there any more."
She sat there anyway, in her good coat, while he worked. The birds came low over the tarmac, skimming it, and one landed on the railing above them with its red throat puffed out. Frank had a swallow on his forearm from his navy days. He used to say each pair meant a long passage crossed, and that he'd collected a few, though he never said how many had been lost on the way.
When Danny asked whether she wanted the sand brushed off before the rain, she told him to leave it. By teatime the wind would have it halfway to the sea, and the birds would be gone by the summer. Still, she watched one swallow drop into the grit, dust its wings, and rise again over the car park, as if it knew exactly where it was going.
