Heart puzzle piece tattoo in three colours

Colour · Photo

The collage shows a heart made from two interlocking puzzle pieces, drawn in a clean black outline. In each panel one piece is filled solid, with the fill in dark navy, teal or purple, while the other piece is left as unshaded skin. The three photos are close-ups of the same design, with the small heart centred in each frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nobody in Porthallow let a jigsaw sit unfinished past Michaelmas, so when Mrs Ada Pengelly found the lighthouse puzzle still spread across the card table in the back room of the Gull's Rest, she took it as an insult to the house. The lodger who had been working on it, a quiet man called Tobias Hale who paid his rent in coins wrapped in brown paper, had gone on the Tuesday boat with his bag and no note.

She sat down with a cup of stewed tea and started sorting. Edges first, her late husband had always said. Four corners, then the flat sides, then the rest a matter of patience and bad language. By dusk she had the frame built and most of the sea, blue as gentian, but two pieces refused every gap. They were the same shape, two rounded knobs and a neck, the kind a child draws when asked for a fish. She turned them over and found a pencil mark on each, a tiny heart, and beneath it a name she did not know.

On the Friday a girl from the harbour office came up the steps with a parcel addressed to the lodger. Her name was Nell Trewin, and she had sat beside Tobias on the ferry for three winters without ever learning what he did for a living. Ada asked her to stay for a cup of tea. Nell looked at the two odd pieces lying on the table and went very still.

They fitted together with a small click, and the heart they made sat in the middle of the empty sky like something that had been waiting to be noticed. Nell put one finger on the join and laughed, a short wet sound. Ada pushed the last of the clouds into place, filled the kettle, and left the lamp on in the back room all night so that anyone coming up the steps would see it.
