The rain had been coming down the Grand Union since Stoke Bruerne, and by the time we reached the lock at Hatton the cabin roof sounded like gravel poured on a tin tray. Mam steered the Tilly Rose with one hand and wedged the tiller against her hip, which is how she did everything once the weather turned. I was on the towpath with the windlass, soaked to the knickers and feeling sorry for myself.

At the top gate a figure was waiting under a red umbrella with white spots, the sort you buy from a market stall when you have forgotten your own. It was Sid Cawley, who had not spoken to Mam since the business over the coal delivery, and beside him, sitting on a coil of rope as neat as a teacup, was a white cat with a red bow tied on one ear. Sid had found her drying on a ledge inside the chamber, he said, and nobody on the cut had ever seen a cat so clean.

Mam brought the boat in without a word. Sid held the umbrella over the cat, not himself, and when the rain thickened he stood in it with the water running off his collar, grinning like a lad. I understood then that the umbrella had never been meant for him.

We left them at the top lock with the gates groaning shut behind us. When I looked back the umbrella was still up, two small red circles bobbing over the black water, the bow catching what little light there was. Mam said nothing about it for the rest of the day, which in our family is the same as blessing a wedding.
