Fine line · Hand · Colour · Photo

Three small tattoos sit in a row across the inside of a wrist, showing a yellow face blowing a kiss with a red heart, a pink bow, and a gold crown with purple dots. The icons have clean outlines, soft shading and smooth fills, resembling digital emoji artwork. The photograph is taken close up against a pale blue background, with the hand partly visible at the top of the frame.

Nobody in Hollin Pit could write well enough to send a letter down the shaft, so the girls drew their messages in chalk on the lamp-room board, and the lampmen read them while they hung their lamps. Tom Lacey could read a face better than most. When a round yellow face appeared with its lips pursed and a small red heart drifting from them, he knew Bessie Hart had been up early.

The overman saw the board too, and he did not like pictures that made men grin. He wiped it clean each morning with his sleeve. Bessie chalked again the next day, and the day after that, a pink ribbon tied in a bow, and then a crown with plum-coloured dots for its jewels. Tom asked the banksman what it meant. The banksman said only that a crown was a daft thing to draw for a lad who carried a safety lamp.

Then the cage stuck at the four-hundred-fathom mark, and the men were stood in the dark for six hours while the rope was mended. Tom sat with his back to the wet wall and turned the three signs over in his head. A kiss, a ribbon, and a crown. He understood at last. She was not calling him a king. She was saying she would wait at the top, where the light was, and that she would tie the bow herself.

When the cage came up, Bessie was standing at the gate with a length of pink ribbon in her hands. She tied it round his lamp before the overman could stop her, and the board stayed dirty for a week.
