The Palais has painted over the grey wall again, so the spot where you used to lean is now a sort of cream nothing. Mrs Hobday on the door says the new band from Leeds can't keep time, but I danced to them anyway, in the red dress with the bow Mum sewed from the offcut of her good tablecloth. Every girl there wanted the spotted ribbon for her hair. I told them it was spoken for.

You owe me a proper ear. The one you drew on my notepad last Tuesday looked like a teacup somebody had sat on. I've been practising mine on the back of the ration book, two round circles and a bit of cheek, and I think I've got it at last. Bring a pencil when you come home, and bring the good ink from the Post Office, the purple stuff that doesn't run in the rain.

The band played the slow one at half ten, the one you always called our song out of spite. I stood at the edge with my hand on the rail, and the floor was empty but for the light moving across it, and I thought about the sea wall at Cromer, where we wrote our names in the wet sand and the tide took them in order. Yours went first. I kept mine a while longer.
