Two arms are held close together, each showing a small tattoo made of single dots joined by thin black lines. The left arm carries a curved arc of dots with a short hook at its lower end, while the right arm shows an angular line of dots forming a constellation-like shape. The background is a pale wall and dark clothing, with the ink appearing as crisp, delicate linework.

The cage drops at half five, and you are still on the pit-head steps counting stars because your mother said the lamp-room would not open until the sky had gone the colour of wet slate. Tom is already at the lamp-room door, nineteen and pretending he is not nervous, telling you to come inside before the frost gets into your boots. You don't move. Grandad taught you the shapes years ago, scratching them on the back step with a stub of chalk: the Shepherd's Crook, bent over at its lower end where the hook catches the dark, and the Lamp Bracket, angled like the iron arm that holds the lamp at the face. He said stars were only worth knowing if they had a job, and these two had the best jobs going.

The night the roof came down at Harrowgate, the sky was clear and cruelly bright, and you stood at the fence with your breath freezing while the rescue men went in. Nobody talked. Then, one by one, the crew lights came up on the far side of the wheel, and you found yourself joining them the way Grandad had taught you, dot to dot, until the whole crook hung above the slag heap. It was the first time the shapes had looked like a map instead of a game.

Tom came up at dawn, grey with dust and grinning like nothing had happened, and you did not tell him how long you had been looking. You took the biro from your coat pocket and drew the Lamp Bracket on the inside of his upper arm, joining the dots slowly so the ink would hold. "Same sky," he said, and you said yes, because it was the only promise either of you could keep.
