Matching wishbone tattoos on two forearms

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The photograph shows two arms side by side, each with a single wishbone drawn in thin, dark outline. The linework is clean and the wishbones have light grey shading along their curves, giving them some depth. The palette is entirely black and grey against pale skin and a dark background, and the two designs are placed at similar heights to mirror each other.

You find it in the bed under the greengage tree, where the magpies have been working through the scraps your grandmother leaves out. It is bleached and dry and still has its little hook. Nell crouches beside you in her yellow wellies, already claiming the bigger half, because she is eleven and it is the summer the back gate finally came off its hinges.

You hook your fingers round the fork and pull on three. It snaps wrong, one side longer than the other, and Nell whoops and says the wish is hers because she is the one who asked. You don't argue. You hold the short end and wonder what you would have wished for anyway, and the answer is only that she would stop being cross with you about the gate.

The house is sold the autumn you turn nineteen. Nell goes north to train as a nurse, you go south for a job nobody in the family understands, and the greengage tree is cut down by a man who doesn't know its roots. Letters come less often. Then one morning a photograph arrives of her own small bone, drawn in thin grey lines, and you laugh out loud on the platform until a stranger asks if you're all right.

You book the chair that same week and ask for the bone in the same size and place, so that when the two of you finally sit at your grandmother's old table and hold your arms out side by side, the pieces line up again, one a little shorter than the other, and the wish stays where it has always been, unspoken between you.
