Matching yin yang tattoos on three feet
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
Three bare feet rest on a pale tiled floor, each with a black yin yang design and curved script lettering that reads around the symbol. The left and right designs are solid black ink, while the middle foot has an outlined version with the script following its curve. The ink is crisp and bold with a clean, simple finish, and the close framing centres the tattoos.

Stand under the awning, the lot of you, because the rain's coming sideways off the river and I'll not tell this twice to a drowned audience. Tanner Lane had three cobblers' daughters once, and the eldest, Ruth, had a habit of finishing other people's sentences before they'd got their breath.

Bea was the middle one, and she was the only one who ever sat still. She had her moon drawn in outline only, a half-filled circle, because she said the part you couldn't see was the part that mattered. Ruth and Bea had theirs solid black, the colour of boot polish at midnight. The three of them worked the stall by the fish market, mending soles for the dockers and quarrelling over who'd take the wet side of the counter.
Then came the winter the river rose into the eel-man's shop and carried off his ledger. Every debt in the market was written in that book, and by Friday every debtor had decided they owed nothing at all. Ruth wanted to shout them down. Bea wanted to wait. The argument went on until the lamps were lit, and neither of them noticed that the youngest, who'd been listening from the back with her own sole half-stitched, had walked out into the rain to find the ledger herself.
She found it wedged under the fourth bridge, pages swollen like bread, and carried it back against her chest. Ruth and Bea were still shouting when she put it on the counter. Nobody spoke. And that's why, if you go down Tanner Lane after a downpour, you'll see three shapes in the puddles, two dark and one only an outline, and you'll see the water keeps its own counsel about which one is which.
