Two people hold hands on a bed, with a small black yin yang tattoo visible on each person's forearm near the wrist. The tattoos are simple, solid black linework with no shading, and the symbols are mirrored in design. The image is warm-toned and close-cropped, with the tattoos sitting in the centre of the frame.

Frost furred the yard by five, and Ruth Aldous broke the skin on the water trough with the heel of her boot while her brother Col argued with the gate hinge. They had not spoken properly since the sale of the top field. Their father's ledger sat on the kitchen dresser with two bookmarks pushed into it, one at the page where he had written Ruth's name and one at the page where he had written Col's, both in the same careful hand.

The ewe in the end pen had twins that came backwards, tangled as if they belonged to opposite sides of one knot. Ruth knelt in the straw with her sleeves rolled past the elbow, her forearms slick and cold, and felt the smaller lamb turn in her palm. Col came in without a word and held the lantern steady above her, the way he had done when they were children and the old dog was the only one who knew how to be quiet in a barn.

Afterwards they sat on upturned buckets with tea gone cold between them. He admitted he had taken the field money to pay for the drainage she insisted on. She admitted she had given the bank the wrong figure first, and had lain awake sure it would ruin them both. Neither of them said sorry in so many words. Ruth drew a curl of a shape in the condensation on the window, a dot set into each half, and Col looked at it for a long while before he took the cloth from her and drew the other half to meet it. In the pen behind them the two lambs slept against the same wall, one dark-faced and one pale, each keeping the other warm.
