Metallic chain and diamond tattoo on upper arm
Geometric · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A close crop shows a woman's torso in a teal, blue and white bikini top, with a row of linked chain motifs and a band of diamond shapes across her upper arm. The designs appear to be temporary metallic tattoos in silver, white, teal and gold, with clean, even outlines and flat fills. A small gold feather or ring motif sits lower on her side, and the background shows water and trees under bright daylight.

The fiddler at Harrow Mill dance hall had one rule for Saturday nights: nobody paid the toll at the door with coin. They paid with a link. Each dancer brought a single ring of silver wire from home, and Mags Tulley hung them along a chain across the rafters until the whole room glittered under the lamps.

A stranger came in October, a tall man who danced without touching anyone and never once missed a step. He offered no link. Instead he laid a row of flat painted diamonds on the boards, teal and gold and white, and said they were worth more than any wire. The fiddler said the hall was not a shop. The stranger smiled and asked whether the chain would hold the weight of a whole town's wishes.
Mags had counted every link since spring, and she saw the trick before the fiddle stopped. Diamonds lying flat could be lifted and carried out the door, and nobody would miss them. So she hung the first diamond on the chain and told him the toll was one dance for every link he could count. He could not count them, so he danced until the lamp oil ran low and the chain sagged with the weight of his leaving.
At dawn the wire hung where it had always hung, every link present, and the diamonds were gone from the boards. Mags kept one silver link in her apron pocket ever after, bright as the day it was cast, and she never again let a stranger pay at the door.
